...However, in the late Middle Ages, not only did the size of each painting become larger, but the brushwork became more detailed in order to express light and shade realistically, making it physically difficult to maintain the fresco technique. To solve this problem, the painting was divided into sections to limit the amount of plasterwork (giornata) that could be used for one day. This meant that, for example, it would be acceptable to spend a day painting the face of one person.
