Japanese: トカゲ(蜥蜴) - トカゲ

A general term for reptiles with well-developed limbs that belong to the family Scincidae (Lizards), suborder Lacertilia, order Squamata, and is called "skink" in English. In a broader sense, it refers to reptiles that belong to the suborder Lacertilia (Lizards), and includes the above-mentioned families as well as iguanas, geckos, chameleons, lizards, and agamas.

In Japan, the lizards commonly referred to as skinks belong to the Eumeces genus , and six species are found in the genus, including the Japanese skink E. latisctatus (illustration), which is found in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and surrounding remote islands, the Okada skink E. okadae in the Izu Islands, the Okinawa skink E. marginatus in the Ryukyu Islands, and the Barbarian skink E. barbouri .

有鱗目トカゲ亜目スキンク(トカゲ)科Scincidaeに属する四肢の発達した爬虫類の総称で，とくに英名でskinkと呼ばれる。広義にはトカゲ亜目Lacertiliaに属する爬虫類を指し，英名でlizardと呼ばれ，上記のほかイグアナ，ヤモリ，カメレオン，カナヘビ，アガマなどの各科も含まれる。
［形態］
　日本でふつうトカゲと呼ばれるものはトカゲ属Eumecesに含まれ，北海道，本州，四国，九州および周辺の離島にニホントカゲE.latisctatus（イラスト）が分布し，伊豆諸島にオカダトカゲE.okadae，南西諸島にはオキナワトカゲE.marginatus，バーバートカゲE.barbouriなど6種が分布する。
