The ancient Roman god of forests. His name is thought to have the same origin as favore (to give blessings), and he was the god who protected livestock and crops. As a god of livestock, he was called Inuus. Faunus was also called Fatuus because he had the power of prophecy, but this is because an unidentified voice in the forest was attributed to him, and it is thought to be related to fāri (to speak). Incidentally, Fauna, the goddess of livestock and fields, and Fatua, the goddess of prophecy, are both feminine forms of this god. The Roman festival of Lupercalia, which has been held since ancient times on February 15, is a festival to pray for fertility in crops, livestock, and humans, and it is believed that Faunus was the deity worshipped there. According to Roman legend, Faunus was an ancient king of Latium, and was later identified with Pan in Greek mythology, becoming a being similar to the Greek satyr.
