1885‐1933 King of Iraq. Reigned 1921-33. Son of Hussein of the Hashemite family. Born in Hijaz, raised in Istanbul, and returned to Mecca in 1908. Led the Arab Revolt that began in 1916, and entered Damascus in 1918. Recommended by the Arab-Syrian National Congress as king of the Kingdom of Syria in 1920, he was ousted by the invasion of French troops. He attended the Paris Peace Conference and advocated independence for Arab nations. With British backing, he became king of Iraq in 1921. He promulgated a constitution in 1925, signed the Anglo-Iraqi Treaty in 1930, and joined the League of Nations in 1932, giving the Kingdom of Iraq the appearance of "independence."
