1127‐94 The second emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty of China. Reigned 1162-89. His given name was Zhao (Zhao). He was the grandson of the 7th Emperor Taizu of Song. He was adopted by the first emperor of the Southern Song Dynasty, Gaozong. He became the crown prince and Gaozong abdicated the throne to him. He was unsuccessful in recapturing the northern lands that had been seized by the Jin Dynasty, but in 1164 (the 2nd year of the Longxing era), he made peace with Sejong of the Jin Dynasty, changing the relationship between emperor and vassal to that of uncle and niece, and changing the annual tribute to a yearly offering, reducing the amount by 100,000. During his 28 years of reign, the development of Jiangnan progressed and the national finances were strong, surpassing the heyday of the Northern Song Dynasty.
