King of the Pallava dynasty in South India. Reigned from 600 to 625. He was active in many fields, including politics, art, and literature. He expanded his rule to the Krishna River basin, strengthening the power of his dynasty, but clashed with the emerging Chalukya dynasty, which sparked a long conflict between the two dynasties. He was a Jain, but converted to Shaivism in Hinduism under the influence of the saint Uppal. The rock caves at Mahabalipuram, representative of the Pallava architectural style, were built during the reign of this king. [Shigematsu Shinji]

南インドのパッラバ朝の王。在位600‐625年。政治，芸術，文学の多面で活躍した。クリシュナー川流域まで支配を広げ王朝の権力を強めたが，新興勢力のチャールキヤ朝とぶつかり，その後の両朝の長い抗争の契機をつくった。彼はジャイナ教徒であったが，聖人アッパルの影響によってヒンドゥー教シバ派に改宗した。パッラバ朝の建築様式を代表するマハーバリプラムの石窟がこの王の時代に造営された。【重松伸司】
