Pheropsophus jessoensis (English name: Blinder Beetle)

Japanese: ミイデラゴミムシ（英語表記）Pheropsophus jessoensis

Order Coleoptera, family Brachinidae. When it encounters an enemy or threatens it, it emits a pale yellowish-white gas from the tip of its abdomen with a buzzing sound, and is also called the Heppirimushi. Body length 11-18mm. The head and pronotum are wrinkled and covered with large dots. The elytra have shallow, thin grooves, and the intercostal space has a thick ridge in the center. The yellowish-brown pattern on the elytra is conspicuous. It is distributed from Hokkaido to Amami Oshima, and can be found under damp dead grass. If the gas hits the skin directly, it causes a type of burn. Another species, P. javanus, lives in the Okinawa region.

甲虫目クビボソゴミムシ科。敵にあったり，おどしたりすると，腹端から淡黄白色のガスを「ぶすっ」という音とともに体外に発射する虫で，ヘッピリムシともいう。体長 11～18mm。頭部と前胸背は皺が多く，大きい点刻を粗布する。上翅には浅く細い条溝があり，間室には中央に太い隆条がある。上翅の黄褐色紋が目立つ。北海道から奄美大島にまで分布し，湿った枯れ草の下などにみられる。ガスをまともに皮膚に受けると一種のやけどを起す。沖縄地方には別種のオオミイデラゴミムシ P.javanusがすむ。
