An evergreen tree of the Rutaceae family, the northernmost distribution of which is in the Ryukyu Islands, that grows to a height of about 5 m (illustration). The twigs are grayish white with slightly flattened nodes. The plant is entirely hairless. The leaves are opposite and trifoliate. The leaflets are obovate-oblanceolate or oblong-oblanceolate, papery, 8-9 cm long, and lack sawtooth edges. They have 2-4 cm long petioles. In Okinawa, small white flowers grow in axillary, bifurcated panicles 3-5 cm long in summer. The sepals are about 1 mm long, the petals about 3 mm long, and there are eight stamens.
