Basement membrane

The basal surface of epithelial tissue, which covers the surface of the body and the inner surfaces of various internal organs, is backed by connective tissue, but when viewed under an optical microscope, a thin, structureless layer can be seen between the basal surface and the connective tissue. This is called the basement membrane, and when examined under an electron microscope, it can be seen that this area consists of a layer called the lamina densa, which is rich in proteins and polysaccharides and is in contact with the bottom of the epithelial cells, and a layer on the outside of this that is densely lined with fine fibers, and these two form the basement membrane. Currently, the lamina densa is considered to be the basement membrane. The spiral lamina of the inner ear was once called the basement membrane, but this term is no longer used.

体表面や体内の諸臓器の内面を覆っている上皮組織の基底面は、結合組織によって裏打ちされているが、その基底面と結合組織との間には、光学顕微鏡で見ると無構造な薄い層が連続して認められる。これが基底膜とよばれるものであり、電子顕微鏡で調べると、この部分では、上皮細胞の底部に接するタンパク質と多糖類とに富んだ、基底板とよばれる層と、その外側に微細線維が密に走っている層があり、両者で基底膜を形成していることがわかる。現在では、基底板が、すなわち基底膜と考えられている。また、かつては内耳のラセン板を基底膜とよんだが現在は用いられていない。
