〘名〙① 俗に、人にとりついて貧乏にさせるという神。乞食坊主のような姿で、老いさらばえて色青ざめ、破れた渋団扇(しぶうちわ)を持って悲しそうな姿で現われるという。また、貧乏や、不景気な事、不幸などを持ちこむ人のたとえ。近世になって現われはじめた都市的な俗信だが、焼味噌(やきみそ)のにおいを好み、いろりの火種を絶やすと出るなどという俗信がある。窮鬼。びんぼがみ。※俳諧・誹諧之連歌（飛梅千句）（1540）墨何第一〇「門のうちへはひとりましませふくの神ひんほう神をつれられて」② 相撲番付で、十両筆頭のこと。幕内力士と取り組むことが多く、そのわりに収入は少なく、種々のことで損をするところからいう。※東京風俗志（1899‐1902）〈平出鏗二郎〉下「十両取の首位なるを貧乏神(ビンボフガミ)といふ」
