Landor, Walter Savage

Landor, Walter Savage
Born January 30, 1775, Warwick
Died: September 17, 1864. Florence. English poet. He had a fiery temper, and even after being expelled from Oxford University, he was surrounded by conflicts, so he spent more than 20 years in Italy. In addition to the tragedy Count Julian (1812), he wrote other works, including Hellenics (47), Italics (48), and Heroic Idylls (63), which are collections of pastoral, lyric, and aphoristic poems. His poems are classical in form and theme, and have a clear, orderly style, sometimes with a satirical tone. However, he is best known for his prose works Imaginary Conversations of Literary Men and Statesmen (24-28) and Imaginary Conversations of Greeks and Romans (53). Characters from various eras, from Epicurus to G. Washington, appear to discuss political, social, and literary issues and represent Landor's views, and here too Landor's neat, clear style, well-versed in the classics, shines through.

Imaginary Conversations of Literary Men and Statesmen (24~28) ,『想像の対話-ギリシア・ローマ編』 Imaginary Conversations of Greeks and Romans (53) である。
