A general term for the areas discovered, conquered, and colonized by the Spanish. The correct term is Las Indias. It generally refers to the present-day West Indies, South America, parts of North America, and the Philippine Islands. Originally, it was a general term for the East Asian region, including present-day India, China, and Japan. Columbus's goal on his westward voyage was a fantasy East Asia, the geography of which was still unclear at the time. When Columbus arrived on Guanahani Island (San Salvador Island) in 1492, he considered the place to be the Indies and its inhabitants to be Indians. Until the early 19th century, the King of Spain ruled over his Indian subjects under the title of King of the Indies.

スペイン人が発見，征服，植民した地域の総称。正しくはLas Indias。おおむね現在の西インド諸島，南アメリカ，北アメリカの一部およびフィリピン諸島を指す。もともとは現在のインド，中国，日本などを含めた東アジア地域の総称で，コロンブスが西方航海で目指したのも，当時はまだその地理も明らかでない空想的な東アジアであった。1492年グアナハニ島（サン・サルバドル島）に到着したコロンブスは，そこをインディアス，その住民をインディオと考えた。スペイン国王は19世紀初頭に至るまで，インディアスの王の称号のもとに臣下インディオを統治した。
