A city in central Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the center of the Kujukuri Plain, and its western part is part of the Shimousa Plateau. The city center was the location of Tokugawa Ieyasu's Togane Palace, and flourished as the center of a market town and a home-based wholesale industry for Kazusa cotton. The Togane Line and Chiba Togane Road run through the city, making it the commercial center of the plains. Housing and industrial complexes are also being developed. In rural areas, there is a trend toward diversification, including rice, vegetables, fruit trees, gardening, and livestock farming. There is Lake Yatsuru, a famous cherry blossom spot, and Togane Onsen. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 89.12 km2 .
