A city in the Haute-Loire department in south-central France. Population 24,064 (1982). Located along the Borne River, a tributary of the Loire River. Several rocky mountains remain in the volcanic basin that have withstood erosion, and each one has a church or statue of the Virgin Mary on its peak, creating a unique landscape. Notre Dame Cathedral is located on the site of an old Roman temple on a hill in the city center, and was rebuilt in the Romanesque style in the 11th and 12th centuries. The Black Madonna statue, which was burned during the French Revolution, attracted pilgrims from abroad throughout the Middle Ages, and Le Puy flourished as an important stop on the way to Santiago de Compostela.
