The name of an indigenous Indian tribe. According to the Rig-Veda, the oldest document in India, Dasa is a demon with black skin, a flat nose, and who sometimes hides in the walls of a city and attacks the Aryans, until Indra, the god worshipped by the Aryans, uses his weapon to conquer it. It is therefore assumed that the indigenous people were conquered by the Aryans invading the Indus River basin. It is often considered synonymous with Dasyu. Incidentally, since some of the indigenous people became slaves to the Aryans, the word Dasa came to be used as a common noun meaning "slave" from the late Vedic period onwards.
