A locomotor organ found in many aquatic vertebrates, including fish. It is a flat structure that protrudes from the body wall and functions as both an oar and a rudder. Fins are divided into paired fins that grow on the sides of the body, such as the pectoral and pelvic fins, and unpaired fins that grow along the midline, such as the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins. The pectoral and pelvic fins are homologous to the forelimbs and hind limbs of terrestrial vertebrates. The fins of bony fish have a pinniped bone at the base, from which fin rays extend radially or parallel to support the membranous part of the fin. The adipose fin found in sweetfish and salmon is a fin that does not have these supports. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
