Because the body is multinucleated and tubular, it is often classified in the order Dictyosiphonales (or Polytrichum commune) along with marine green algae such as Dictyosiphona and Dictyosiphona arborescens, but some scholars have established the order Dictyosiphonales, emphasizing its characteristics of sexual reproduction by eggs and sperm, and the presence of chlorophyll-free leucocytes in addition to chloroplasts (Feldmann J.Feldmann, 1954). The Dictyosiphonales genus consists of one species, and is found in Okinawa, Switzerland, eastern France, Lake Ontario in Canada, and in the US states of Michigan, Texas, and Wisconsin.
