This moth belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Pyralidae. It is widely distributed from Asia to Australia, and is commonly seen throughout Japan. The adult has a wing span of about 30 mm, is nocturnal, and often flies to lights. The larvae are pests that feed on grasses such as corn, foxtail millet, millet, and wheat, and occur once a year in cold regions and three times a year in warm regions, depending on the region. They have the habit of feeding on the stems of the host plants and releasing insect excrement from the feeding opening by stringing it with silk. They attach to ears of corn and other crops that have not yet formed ears, and sometimes enter the kernels. Before 1970, it was considered to be the same species as Osterlinia nubilalis , which is distributed in Europe, but due to morphological differences, the Asian species was considered to be a different species. The host plants and habits of the larvae of the European species are quite similar to those of the Asian species.
