Agrigento is the capital of the province of Agrigento in the Autonomous Region of Sicily in southern Italy. Its Latin name is Agrigentum. It has a population of 52,953 (2001 census preliminary figure). It is located on a hill at an altitude of 326 meters, with a beautiful view. The surrounding area produces almonds, olive oil, wine, and rock salt, but there has been no notable industrial development and economic activity is stagnant. However, there are many ruins, including the remains of the Temple of Concordia, and it has potential as a tourist destination. It is also known as the birthplace of Nobel Prize-winning author Pirandello. [Kenichi Sakai] historyFounded around 581 BC by the Greek colony of Gela on the southeast coast of Sicily, it was called Akragas. It developed under the tyrant Theron in the 5th century BC, and prospered as a key trading point after defeating the Carthaginian colony of Himera, becoming the second largest city after Syracuse (population 200,000). It produced excellent horses and produced winners at the Olympian Games. The poet Pindar praised Agrigento's prosperity. It was captured by Carthage in 406 BC, and later restored temporarily, but came under Roman control during the Punic Wars and was called Agrigentum. It continued to produce textiles and sulfur, but did not regain its prosperity until the Middle Ages, when it became an Islamic territory in the 9th century. It was recaptured by Christian forces in the 11th century, and a bishopric was established. It has been called Girgenti since the Middle Ages, and was given its current name in 1927.
