Hildesheimer, Wolfgang
Born: December 9, 1916 in Hamburg
[Died] August 21, 1991. Poschiavo, Switzerland. German novelist and playwright. As a Jew, he fled to England during high school, and later studied painting and interior design in Palestine and London. During World War II, he served as a British intelligence officer in Palestine, and after the war, he served as a simultaneous interpreter at the Nuremberg Trials. He later settled in Switzerland. He established his literary reputation with his collection of short stories, Lieblose Legenden (1952). He subsequently published novels such as Paradise for the Deceivers (1953), Tynset (1965), and plays Die Verspätung (1961) and Mary Stuart (1971).
