1098‐1179 Germany's first female mystic. Born into an aristocratic family, she gained a reputation for her religious visions from an early age. She was educated by the hermit Jutta, became a nun around 1114, and in 1136 became the superior (magister) of the Rupertsberg convent near Bingen. According to one theory, Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa) appointed her abbess in 1163. She published her own visions as Scivias (Knowledge of the Ways of the Lord) between 1141 and 1151, which was approved by Pope Eugene III.
