Hildegard of Bingen

Germany's first female mystic. Born into an aristocratic family, she gained a reputation for her religious visions from an early age. She was educated by the hermit Jutta, became a nun around 1114, and in 1136 became the superior (magister) of the Rupertsberg convent near Bingen. According to one theory, Emperor Frederick I (Barbarossa) appointed her abbess in 1163. She published her own visions as Scivias (Knowledge of the Ways of the Lord) between 1141 and 1151, which was approved by Pope Eugene III.

ドイツ最初の女性神秘家。貴族の家柄に生まれ，幼少のころからその宗教的幻視で評判となる。女隠者ユッタJuttaから教育を受け，1114年ころ修道女となり，36年，ビンゲンBingen近郊ルペルツベルク女子修道院の長(マギステル)となる。一説では63年フリードリヒ1世(バルバロッサ)が彼女を修道院長に任じたという。みずから体験した幻視を1141‐51年の間に《スキウィアス(主の道の知識)》として公刊し，教皇エウゲニウス3世の認可を得た。
