A violet-blue flame-like light that appears on the tops of ship masts, church towers, etc. on thunderstorms and stormy nights. It is particularly common on the tops of steep mountains. Long ago, Mediterranean sailors saw it appearing on the masts of their ships and thought it was a sign of protection from St. Elmo (a corrupted version of St. Erasmus, the patron saint of sailors), so they gave it this name. It is a type of discharge phenomenon that occurs when the atmospheric electric field (the ratio of potential difference to distance) on the ground becomes large due to the influence of thick, highly charged clouds (convective clouds) or thunderclouds overhead.
