Sankaiki - Sankaiki

Japanese: 山槐記 - さんかいき
Sankaiki - Sankaiki

This is the diary of Fujiwara (Nakayama) Tadachika, a nobleman from the end of the Heian period to the beginning of the Kamakura period. Although the number of volumes is unknown and many years are missing, it contains entries spanning 44 years from 1151 (Nihei 1) to 1194 (Kenkyu 5). Tadachika had a villa in Nakayama, east of Kyoto, and rose to the position of Naidaijin, one of the three great courtiers, so the diary was called "Sankaiki." It is also known as "Kireiki." As the diary spans the period from the Taira clan government to the Genpei Civil War, it contains many articles that add important historical facts, such as the birth and accession of Emperor Antoku, the death of Taira Shigemori from illness, the repair of Owada no Tomari by Kiyomori, Emperor Mochihito's uprising and the Battle of Uji, the relocation of the capital to Fukuhara, the accession of Emperor Gotoba to the throne, and the great Genryaku earthquake. The writer, Tadachika, became a monk in 1194 and passed away the following March at the age of 65. This diary has been included in the Shiryo Taisei, with the addition of a category of memorial services.
