A city in the Rostov Oblast in the southwest of the Russian Federation. The capital of the oblast. Located in the lower reaches of the Don River, which flows into the Sea of Azov, it has a port. Its origins date back to the mid-18th century, when the Russian Empire built a port and fortress. It is a key location for land and water transport, and the agricultural machinery and food industries have developed. Population: 1.05 million in the administrative district (2008). Rostov-on-Don.
