A city in the Rostov Oblast in the southwest of the Russian Federation. The capital of the oblast. Located in the lower reaches of the Don River, which flows into the Sea of Azov, it has a port. Its origins date back to the mid-18th century, when the Russian Empire built a port and fortress. It is a key location for land and water transport, and the agricultural machinery and food industries have developed. Population: 1.05 million in the administrative district (2008). Rostov-on-Don.
A city in Yaroslavl Oblast, western Russia. Located about 200 km northeast of Moscow. One of the tourist cities in the northeastern suburbs of Moscow, known as the "Golden Ring." It has a long history, having appeared in documents as early as the 9th century, and flourished as the capital of the Rostov Principality in the Middle Ages. Invaded by the Mongol Empire in the 13th century, it was annexed to the Moscow Principality in the 15th century. The Kremlin, built in the 16th and 17th centuries, contains many historical buildings, including the Dormition Cathedral, Basilica of the Vatican, and the Spasana Senyakh Church. Rostov Veliky.
