Hildesheim (English spelling)

Japanese: ヒルデスハイム(英語表記)Hildesheim
Hildesheim (English spelling)
A city in Lower Saxony, northwest Germany, about 30 km south-southeast of Hannover. It originated from a fortress built in the 8th century as a stopover on the trade route between Cologne and Magdeburg. A bishopric was established in 815, and by the 11th century it had developed into the cultural center of the region. It later joined the Hanseatic League and obtained city rights in 1300. It has a longer history than the neighboring cities of Braunschweig and Hannover, but its industrial development was slower than those two cities. Industries such as metal, electrical equipment, household goods, food, and agricultural machinery are based here. About half of the city was destroyed at the end of World War II, but many historical buildings, such as the Gothic town hall, have been restored. The 11th-century St. Mary's Cathedral and St. Michael's Cathedral, with their 12th-century ceiling paintings, were registered as cultural heritage of the World Heritage Sites in 1985. Population: 105,291 (estimated 1991).
