Kobe University

A national university corporation. In 1949, Kobe University of Economics (predecessor of Kobe Higher Commercial School, founded in 1902), its affiliated business school, Kobe Technical College (formerly Kobe Higher Technical School), the former Himeji High School, Hyogo Normal School, and Hyogo Young Teachers' Normal School were merged to form a new national university with six faculties: Literature and Science, Education, Law, Economics, Business Administration, and Engineering. In 1953, a graduate school was established. In 1954, the Faculty of Literature and Science was separated and reorganized to form the Faculty of Letters and the Faculty of Science. In 1964, the Faculty of Liberal Arts was established, and Hyogo Prefectural Kobe Medical College (predecessor of Hyogo Medical University) was transferred to form the Faculty of Medicine. In 1966, Hyogo Agricultural University (prefectural) was transferred to form the Faculty of Agriculture. In 1992, the Faculty of Liberal Arts and the Faculty of Education were reorganized, and the Faculty of International Culture and the Faculty of Human Development were established, bringing the total to 10 faculties. In 2003, the university merged with Kobe University of Mercantile Marine (located in Fukae Minamimachi, Higashinada Ward) to establish the Faculty of Maritime Sciences, bringing the total number of faculties to 11. In addition, the faculties of Law, Economics, and Business Administration reorganized all departments by 1994, and opened their doors to working students by establishing courses that were primarily taught at night (after 2004, student enrollment for the night courses was gradually stopped). As of 2010, the graduate school includes the Graduate Schools of Humanities, International Cultural Studies, Human Development and Environmental Studies, Law, Economics, Business Administration, Science, Medicine, Health Sciences, Engineering, System Informatics, Agriculture, and International Cooperation, as well as the Graduate School of Maritime Sciences, which was established through the merger with Kobe University of Mercantile Marine. The university also has the Research Institute for Economics and Business Administration, the International Medical and Healthcare Exchange Center, and the training ship Fukae Maru. In April 2004, the university became a national university corporation with the enforcement of the National University Corporation Act. The headquarters is located at 1-1 Rokkodai-cho, Nada-ku, Kobe.
