1838‐89 French poet and novelist. Born into a noble family dating back to the 11th century in Brittany, he was himself a count, but as an adult he was forced to live in poverty because his father not only squandered his fortune but also left him with huge debts. At the age of 20, he became acquainted with Baudelaire, who revealed to him the aesthetics of Edgar Poe, and he subsequently became fascinated with the music of Wagner and became familiar with mysticism. These influences nurtured within him a fierce hatred of modern civil society, which was materialistic and positivistic, and its audacity in falsely claiming the name of good sense.
