French poet and novelist. Born into a noble family dating back to the 11th century in Brittany, he was himself a count, but as an adult he was forced to live in poverty because his father not only squandered his fortune but also left him with huge debts. At the age of 20, he became acquainted with Baudelaire, who revealed to him the aesthetics of Edgar Poe, and he subsequently became fascinated with the music of Wagner and became familiar with mysticism. These influences nurtured within him a fierce hatred of modern civil society, which was materialistic and positivistic, and its audacity in falsely claiming the name of good sense.

フランスの詩人，小説家。11世紀にさかのぼるブルターニュの名門の生れで，自身も伯爵であったが，父が財産を蕩尽したばかりか巨額の借財まで残したので，成年後は貧窮の生活を強いられた。20歳のときボードレールの知遇を得てエドガー･ポーの美学を啓示され，つづいてワーグナーの音楽に熱中，また神秘論に親しんだ。これらの影響は物質主義的･実証主義的な近代市民社会と，良識の名を僭称するその厚顔さとに対する激烈な憎悪を彼のうちにはぐくんだ。
