A strait in the central-northern part of the Russian Federation, separating Cape Chelyuskin on the Taymyr Peninsula at the northern tip of Siberia from Severnaya Zemlya. It connects to the Laptev Sea to the east and the Kara Sea to the west. It is about 130 km long, 56 km wide, and has an average depth of 210 m. It freezes over in winter, but is navigable in summer.
