Nicole Oresme

Around 1325-82
French scholastic philosopher. Born near Caen in Normandy, he graduated from the Faculty of Arts at the University of Paris in 1348, after which he furthered his studies at the College of Navarre, where he became its president in 1356. From the late 1360s to the late 1370s, he devoted himself to translating several of Aristotle's works into French and providing detailed critical commentaries on them. In his later years, he became Bishop of Lisieux. His academic achievements were wide-ranging, but what is particularly noteworthy are his detailed examination of the diurnal motion of the Earth in his Treatise on the Celestial and Terrestrial Bodies, and his theoretical development of the issue of strengthening and weakening of forms in his Treatise on the Geometry of Qualities and Motions.

フランスのスコラ哲学者。ノルマンディー地方のカン近郊に生まれ，1348年にパリ大学の学芸学部を出た後，ナバール学寮でさらに研鑽を重ね，56年にはその学寮長となった。その後60年代末から70年代末まで，いくつかのアリストテレスの著作をフランス語に翻訳し，それに緻密で批判的な注釈を付け加えることに力を注いだ。そして晩年にはリジューの司教となった。彼の学問的業績は多岐にわたるが，なかでもとくに注目に値するのは，《天体･地体論》における地球の日周運動に関する詳細な検討と，《性質と運動の図形化について》における形相の強化と弱化の問題に関する理論的展開である。
