River mist

Fog that forms on the surface of a river or its surroundings. It is a type of steam fog. It occurs when the air temperature is low, around 0°C or below, or when the water temperature in the river is high and the temperature difference between the air and water is approximately 8°C or more. At such times, radiation fog is also likely to form on the ground around the river, and the two often mix together to form a thick fog. The river fog in Hitoyoshi, Kumamoto Prefecture, and Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture, is well known.

川面やその周辺にできる霧。蒸気霧の一種。気温が0℃前後以下と低いとき、および川の水温が高く、気温と水温との温度差がおよそ8℃以上になるときに発生する。このようなときには川の周辺の地面上に放射霧もできやすく、両者が混じって濃い霧となることが多い。熊本県人吉(ひとよし)や兵庫県豊岡(とよおか)の川霧はよく知られている。
