Research into the history of business management began gradually in the early 20th century in the works of German Historical School economics and in research into the history of the British Industrial Revolution. Business history became an independent field from socio-economic history in the mid-1920s, when a business history course was established at the Harvard Business School. The first professor, NSB Grass (1884-1956), established the position of business history as one that does not consider the history of business management in relation to changes in socio-economic conditions, but rather studies business administration itself, including management policy, management direction, and management control, in relation to the various organizations and functions within a company.

企業経営の歴史の研究は，20世紀初期からドイツ歴史学派経済学の著作やイギリス産業革命史研究のなかで徐々に手がけられていた。経営史学が社会経済史学とは別個の学問として独立したのは，1920年代中ごろ，ハーバード大学経営学大学院で経営史の講座が開設されてからである。その初代教授グラスN.S.B.Gras(1884‐1956)は，企業経営の歴史を社会経済的諸条件の変遷に即して考察するのではなく，企業内部の諸組織，諸機能に即し，経営政策，経営指揮，経営統制などビジネス･アドミニストレーションそのものを研究するという経営史学の立場を確立した。
