Born May 22, 1911. Grandson of Kawabata Gyokusho. Member of the Kofu-kai in 1939, and awarded the Saburi Prize in 1941. Became a professor at Tama Art University in 1950. Transferred from the Kofu-kai to the Shinseisaku Association in 1952. Moved to New York in 1958, and won an award at the Guggenheim International Exhibition in the same year. Was active internationally as an abstract artist. Died June 29, 2001. Age 90. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts).
