While Myojin is a kind of shrine rank or divine rank given to a specific shrine, Myojin is an honorific title given after the kami name to praise the virtues of the enshrined deity and to express reverence. Many deities and shrines were called Myojin and worshipped by local villages or clan groups. It has been seen since the Heian period, but the distinction from Myojin gradually became unclear, and the title Myojin fell out of use after the Middle Ages. It is similar to how ujigami (clan deities) and ubusunagami (guardian deities of the land) came to take on the characteristics of local deities in the early modern period. Daimyojin is an honorific title given to deities who are revered throughout the country, and well-known names include Inari Daimyojin and Kasuga Daimyojin.
