Indara

Japanese:
Indara

A Taoist and Buddhist painter from the late Yuan Dynasty (14th century) in China. His birth and death years and career are unknown. He is known as the painter of the National Treasure "Dankan Zen Kaizu" (Divided Zen Meetings), which includes "Hanzan and Shide" (Tokyo National Museum), "Hotei" (Nezu Museum), and "Zenshi Chijo" (Seikado). His style follows the style of ink painting by Song and Yuan Zen monks who were hobbyists, but his concise expression is suitable for Zen meetings and paintings of the founders, and his brushwork, such as casually rubbing light ink, is highly unique. There are no surviving pieces in China, and only a few have been brought to Japan and survive. In addition, the name Indara is not found in Chinese painting history books, and the only other record of him is a two-line inscription on one of his belongings, in the Muromachi period book "Kundai Kanso Choki." Since there is a belongings bearing a signature by Soseki Bonki (1296-1370), a Zen monk of the Daie school at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, it is assumed that he was a person of roughly the same age.
