...The enthusiastic support for the "Fraternity Movement" of André Matswa, a Congolese living in Paris, could also be seen as a reaction to the harshness of French rule in the Congo. In 1946, the Congolese Progressive Party (PPC) was founded in the south, and a branch of the French Socialist Party was formed in the north, the latter later calling itself the Movement for Socialism in Africa (MSA). In 1956, Abbé Fulbert Youlou (1917-72) founded the Union Democratic for the Defense of African Interests (UDDIA), which weakened the influence of the PPC and created a situation in which the UDDIA and the MSA were in conflict with each other. ...
