...Berkeley's choreography, which showed the dancers' dancing in a kaleidoscope-like, splendid bird's-eye view, and Astaire's choreography and dancing, which showed the actual human figures dancing without any "tricks," symbolized the two basic styles of Hollywood musicals from the 1930s to the 1940s. Each company promoted its own "musical star," such as Bing Crosby at Paramount, Deanna Durbin at Universal, and Alice Faye and Betty Grable (1916-1973) at 20th Century Fox, and competed in the production of various musical films. Among them, MGM had many talented people and produced works with a distinctive style such as the Broadway Melody series (1936, 38, 40). Judy Garland, who appeared in one of the series, The Broadway Melody of 1938, at the age of 15, won a special Academy Award for her next starring role in The Wizard of Oz (1939), and went on to reign as Hollywood's biggest musical star for the next 15 years.
