Hiramaki Animal Group

Japanese: 平牧動物群 - ひらまきどうぶつぐん

This is a representative group of fossil mammals from the Miocene in Japan, and is represented by the terrestrial mammals found in the Hiramaki Formation in the Kani and Toki regions of Gifu Prefecture. Its members include the Anectensis elephant, the Hiramaki horse, the ancient tapir, the crab rhinoceros, the lion deer, and the hippopotamus-like Brachiodus. It is considered to be of southern origin because it is accompanied by the temperate Daijima-type plant community, and is distinguished from the Togari fauna of the late Miocene, which was considered to be of "northern origin" to Desmostylus and cetaceans (Takai Fuyuji, 1939).

日本の代表的な中新世の化石哺乳類群で，岐阜県の可児（かに）･土岐（とき）地方に分布する平牧層から産出する陸生の哺乳類によって代表される。アネクテンスゾウ，ヒラマキウマ，ムカシバク，カニサイ，ミノジカのほかにカバに似たブラキオダスがその構成者としてあげられている。暖帯型の台島（だいじま）型植物群をともなうことから南方系とされ，デスモスチルスやクジラ類の“北方系”とみなされていた中新世後期の戸狩（とがり）動物群と区別された(高井冬二，1939)。
