A city in the Latium region of ancient Italy. Today, Palestrina. Located on a hill in the Apennine Mountains, it is said to have been founded by Telegonus, son of Odysseus. In the 7th century BC, Etruscan culture flourished, and the city fought against Rome together with the Latin cities, but was defeated. After fighting, it became a place to accept refugees from Rome, and in 90 BC it became an autonomous city (municipium). In 82 BC, it became a base for the Marius faction, and was captured by L. Sulla, who moved the city to the foot of the mountain as a colony. The Temple of Fortuna, built around the 1st century BC, is famous. It was also the site of villas for emperors Augustus, Hadrian, and Pliny the Younger.
