A city in central-eastern Shiga Prefecture, on the eastern shore of Lake Biwa. It was incorporated as a city in 1937. It has long been a key point for land and water transport, and the city centre developed as a castle town around Hikone Castle, owned by the Ii clan. It is served by the Tokaido Main Line, the Omi Railway and the Meishin Expressway. There are large spinning factories, valve factories and cement factories, with women's underwear being particularly common. Buddhist altars are a local industry. The area around the castle ruins still retains the atmosphere of a castle town, and is a park containing the triple castle tower, Kaikoku Kinenkan (National Opening Memorial Hall) and Ii Art Museum. The Faculty of Economics at Shiga University is located here. In 1993, Lake Biwa became a Ramsar Convention registered wetland. Area: 196.87 km2 . Population: 112,156 (2010). → Related topics Sawayama | Shiga University | Takamiya | Toriimoto | Harumura Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
