A mountainous region in south-central Croatia along the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina. It roughly overlaps with the Croatian part of the "military border zone Vojina Krajina" established by the Habsburg Empire in the 16th century for the purpose of defense against the Ottoman Empire. Krajina means border zone. If we limit it to the area of Krajina that was once recognized by the Croatian government, that is, the autonomous districts of Knin and Glina, the population is about 200,000, of which 140,000 are Serbs and 40,000 are Croats (1991).
