Japanese: ノネズミ(野鼠) - ノネズミ

A general term for wild rodents that live in fields, forests, etc. In contrast to house mice (three species: brown rat, brown rat, and house mouse), which live in artificial environments such as livestock sheds, houses, and buildings and depend on humans for living space, food, and other living resources, this refers to rodents that live outdoors and generally obtain their living resources from nature. Not only are there an extremely large number and diversity of species, such as the harvest mouse (illustration), field vole, Japanese field mouse (illustration), Japanese speciosus (illustration), and dormouse (illustration), but they also have large populations, usually with a population density of several dozen per hectare, and they play an important role in the ecosystem as herbivores that eat seeds, leaves, fruits, and bark, and as prey that supports the lives of carnivores such as snakes, owls, weasels, and foxes.

原野，森林などにすむ野生のネズミ類の総称。家畜小屋，人家，ビルなどの人為環境にすみ，生活空間や食物などの生活資源を人間に依存するイエネズミ(クマネズミ，ドブネズミ，ハツカネズミの3種)に対して，野外にすみ，生活資源を原則として自然界から得ているネズミ類を指す。カヤネズミ（イラスト），ハタネズミ，ヒメネズミ（イラスト），アカネズミ（イラスト），ヤマネ（イラスト）など，種類数がきわめて多く，多様性に富むばかりでなく，1ha当りの生息密度がふつう数十匹と，個体数も多く，種子，葉，果実，樹皮などを食べる植物食者として，またヘビ，フクロウ，イタチ，キツネなどの動物食者の生活を維持する獲物として，生態系のなかで重要な地位を占める。
