A type of body wave that travels inside an elastic body. P waves cause the medium to vibrate in a direction parallel to the direction of the P wave's propagation (hence the name longitudinal wave). P waves cause deformation in the medium accompanied by a change in volume, and because they have the property of conveying states of expansion and compression, they are also called compressional waves. The propagation speed of P waves inside the earth's crust is thought to be about 6 to 7 kilometers per second.
