Hirata [city] - Hirata

Japanese: 平田[市] - ひらた

An old city occupying the northeastern part of Shimane Prefecture and the western part of the Shimane Peninsula. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. The city center on the left bank of the Hii River is served by the Ichibata Railway, which connects Matsue, Izumo, and Taisha-cho (now Izumo City). During the feudal era, a market for Unshu cotton was established here and it was a major distribution center. In recent years, seaweed, clams, and abalone have been farmed here, and industries such as transportation equipment, steel, and electrical machinery have been established here. The city is known for its Fuyu persimmons. It is home to Gakuen-ji Temple and Ichibata Yakushi. In March 2005, it was incorporated into Izumo City along with the towns of Sada, Taki, Koryo, and Taisha in Hikawa County. Area: ^{142.05 km2} . Population: 29,394 (2003).

島根県北東部，島根半島西部を占める旧市。1955年市制。斐伊(ひい)川左岸にある中心市街は松江・出雲両市，大社町（現・出雲市）を結ぶ一畑電車が通じ，藩政時代雲州木綿の市が立ち，大集散地であった。近年はノリ，シジミ，アワビ養殖が行われ，輸送用機器，鉄鋼，電気機械などの工業が立地。富有柿を特産。鰐淵(がくえん)寺，一畑薬師がある。2005年３月簸川郡佐田町，多伎町，湖陵町，大社町と出雲市へ編入。142.05km²。２万9394人（2003）。
