Aleksandr Mihaylovich Rodchenko

Russian painter, set designer, photographer, and designer. Born in St. Petersburg. Studied at the Kazan Art School, he made his debut with abstract composition paintings in the late 1910s, creating an extremely colorful and rich aesthetic world. From 1920 to 1930, he taught the next generation in Moscow, but during that time he was active in many fields. In the 1920s, he created many posters that are still famous today (such as for the film Battleship Potemkin), and also left behind unique work in book design. He also worked in a variety of fields as a set designer for theater and film, and as a photographer, he worked on photomontages, and produced excellent works in this field as well. In the 1930s, he took portraits of celebrities in addition to artistic photographs. He died in Moscow. He was a pioneering designer in the former Soviet art world, and it was only after the Thaw that his entire work, including his early abstract compositions, was finally being reevaluated. His wife, Stepanova Варвара Ф. Stepanova/Varvara F. Stepanova (1894-1958) was also famous as a painter and designer.
