Mactan Island (English spelling)

Japanese: マクタン[島]（英語表記）Mactan Island

A 61.1 km2 island in the central Philippines, just east of Cebu Island. It was formed by the uplift of a coral reef lying across from Cebu City. Magellan died on this island during his circumnavigation of the world, and a monument was erected to commemorate the achievements of the chief at the time, Lapu-Lapu. The entire island is made up of low-lying land less than 3m above sea level, but it is not suitable for farming as it has not been weathered much. An international airport was built in the 1960s, and a bridge was built in the 1970s to connect it directly to Cebu City. The entire island is Lapu-Lapu City, with a population of 141,000 (1994).

フィリピン中部，セブ島のすぐ東側にある属島。面積61.1km2。セブ市の対岸に横たわるサンゴ礁の隆起によってできた。マゼランは世界周航の途中この島で戦死したが，当時の首長ラプ･ラプの勲功をたたえて記念碑が建てられている。島全体が標高3m以下の低平地からなるが，風化が進んでいないため農耕には適さない。1960年代に国際空港が建設され，70年代に橋がかかってセブ市と直結された。島全体がラプ･ラプ市で，人口は14万1000(1994)。
