cold-type

...When the printed photosensitive material is developed, black positive characters on a white background are obtained, from which printing plates for letterpress, offset, gravure, etc. are made. In other words, since characters can be printed without making letterpresses, it is also called cold type, meaning that heated cast type is not used. Before the war, this phototypesetter was only used in specialized fields, but after World War II, it came into widespread use due to the destruction of type in war damage, advances in photomechanical processes, and the rise of offset printing.
