…It forms hydrate Xe・5.76H 2 O (melting point 23.5°C, decomposition pressure 1.15 atm at 0.1°C) and Xe・3C 6 H 4 (OH) 2 with hydroquinone, but these are clathrate compounds, in which xenon atoms are trapped in a three-dimensional mesh structure formed by hydrogen bonds between water molecules and hydroquinone molecules, and are not true compounds with valence bonds. The first true compounds were xenon hexafluoroplatinate (XePtF 6) synthesized by N. Bartlett of Canada in 1962, and xenon tetrafluoride (XeF 4) synthesized by Claassen et al. of the United States in the same year.
