...After that, they fought many wars of liberation to break away from Danish rule, but they were unable to strike a decisive blow. In the 16th century, the nobleman Gustav Eriksson (1496-1560) finally liberated his country in 1523 with the support of the peasants of Lübeck and the Dalarna region. He ascended to the throne as King Gustav I Vasa, and worked energetically to restore the country's power by adopting Protestantism (Lutheranism), building up the military, reviving the economy, and establishing a hereditary system of kingship, thus laying the foundations for the country and establishing the Vasa dynasty.
