Japanese: マンジュシャゲ(曼珠沙華) - マンジュシャゲ

Another name for Amaryllidaceae, red spider lily. It is a poisonous plant, but the bulbs can be ground up and soaked in water to remove the poison, and then eaten. It was probably brought from China during the Jomon period for food and allowed to grow wild. It has no leaves when it flowers, and the leaves open after it has finished blooming and wither in spring, which makes it a little strange, but it is now cultivated for decorative purposes. The wild ones in Japan are triploid, and because they cannot produce seeds, they were carried around by humans. [Hotta Mitsuru] The word manjushaka is a transliteration of the Sanskrit manjushaka, and is also translated into Chinese as nyoihana (nyoi-ka) (nyoi-ka), kaku-hana (kanbana), etc., but this Indian plant is not the red Chinese or Japanese red spider lily, but is thought to be a white-flowered species.

ヒガンバナ科ヒガンバナの別名。有毒植物であるが鱗茎(球根)をすりつぶして水にさらし毒抜きをし食べられるので，縄文時代に食用にするため中国から持ちこまれ野生化したものであろう。花の時期には葉はまだなく，終わってから葉をひらき，春には葉が枯れるので，すこし異様であるが最近では観賞用に栽培される。日本に野生するのは三倍体で，種子はできないから人間が持ち歩いたものである。【堀田満】　曼珠(殊)沙華ということばはサンスクリットのマンジューシャカmañjūṣakaの音写で，如意花，檻花などとも漢訳されるが，このインドの植物は中国や日本の赤いヒガンバナではなく，白い花を咲かす類品と思われる。
