A mineral in which a metal element is bonded with a hydroxyl group -OH, and there are relatively few mineral species. When electropositive metals such as Mg and Al are bonded with two and three hydroxyl groups, respectively, Mg(OH) 2 and Al(OH) 3 are formed. The former is brucite, and the latter is gibbsite. Both minerals form in moist environments. Brucite is a mineral formed as a result of hydration caused by weathering decomposition of high magnesium-containing rocks such as serpentine and low-temperature hydrothermal alteration, while gibbsite is a mineral formed as a result of hydration caused by weathering decomposition of acidic rocks and is the main component of bauxite.
